This quartet was composed with a retrospective aim. It dates back to 1987, but the composer did not complete it until 1999 following a long gestation period. Two years later, it was first performed by the David Quartet as part of the Schubertiade that takes place in the Winterthur Auditorium.
It consists of four movements. The first is a «Lyrical Andante», which alternates between a singable episode and another, lighter episode that is built around triplets, intentionally evoking a Schubertian world. The second, «Slow and contemplative» movement displays delicate, supported composition with a somewhat impressionistic complexion. The third is a «Scherzo» with a contrapuntal nature based on triplets, developed with some dynamism and interrupted by a lyrical passage that is almost pastoral. The coda resumes the initial tempo.
The «Finale» is the most complex movement and the one with the most rhythmic flexibility. After alternating between «Adagio» and «Allegretto» with an impressionistic nature, a rather hard «Allegro» is established in a virtuoso atmosphere. The culmination recovers the lyricism of the beginning and leads into a subtle allusion to the theme of a piece for violin and piano by the German composer Albert Dietrich.
The work finishes delicately in an interrogative atmosphere.
