Frederic Mompou is, without a doubt, one of the most universal Catalan composers of the twentieth century. As the miniaturist of sound that he was, Mompou took meticulous care when creating his pieces and was very demanding in terms of the end result. However, he did not always part with the material he discarded, often keeping it, whether to review at a later date or to mine for ideas for another piece.

A large part of this material found a home at the Frederic Mompou Foundation, founded by the composer’s widow, Carmen Bravo, while other material still ended up in the Biblioteca de Catalunya. Thanks to the efforts to promote this composer on the part of Joan Millà, current chairman of the foundation, and the collaboration of pianists Mac McClure and Jordi Masó, who catalogued and recorded these previously unpublished works, it has been possible to bring to light a large number of Mompou’s hereto unheard compositions.

There are three versions for piano of Barri de Platja [Neighborhood by the Beach]—two of these are titled Al mar [To the Ocean]. The first version was dated by Mompou himself, «París, diciembre 1911» [Paris, December, 1911]. This manuscript of the first version also includes another piece titled En la montaña [On the Mountain], with a general title for the two works, Dos impresiones [Two Impressions]. The second version of Al mar is not dated, but it has an added Introduction and the ending is different. Barri de Platja for piano is identical to the second version of Al mar. Both pieces contain a melody which Mompou used later, with an altered rhythm, in Canción y Danza, Nº 3 [Song and Dance, No. 3].

The arrangement of the work for string quartet is found in a three page manuscript dated «Barcelona, 16 d’octubre de 1915» [Barcelona, October 16, 1915]. Clearly, it was arranged for string quartet after the piano version and is one of the few chamber music works by Mompou.

The other work, Oración mística a San Juan de la Cruz [Mystical Prayer to St. John of the Cross], dated 1947, has a direct relationship to the most mystical work by Mompou, his Música callada [Silent Music]. Five years after the composition of Oración mística, in the course of his speech upon his admission as a member of the Real Academia de Bellas Artes de Sant Jordi [Royal Academy of Fine Arts of St. George], the composer comments on the source of his new introspective creativity: his desire to “begin again“ with a new sonority based on the organum and rhythms of a recitative, recalling the primitive instinct for music.
