Enric Morera, one of the most important Catalan composers, has always been known for his Sardanas, which have a straightforward character without excessive ornamentation or grandiloquence in the transitional passages. On the contrary, his works in this genre are noted for their pure melodies and simple but effective accompaniments.

Davant la Verge [Before the Virgin], composed in 1908, is a symphonic sardana based on one of these inspired melodies in the section of the “short steps” and at the beginning of the “long steps” a chorale melody played by the brass. These two passages are the principal and, in fact, almost only important elements in the work.

In this sardana Morera left behind the more danceable style of his other sardanas in favor of a sincere and devout mysticism. It is another fine example of the genius of one of the most important composers of Modernismo.
