Works for Violin and Piano:

Malats composed and transcribed several works for violin and piano based on some of his piano works.  Two of these are the Canto de Amor (Love Song) (Source: it is found in the Biblioteca Nacional de Catalunya) and the Serenata Española (Spanish Serenade) (Source: it is found in the Biblioteca del Conservatori Municipal de Música de Barcelona), both from the Suite Impresiones de España (Impressions of Spain). Malats performed Canto de Amor with the violinist Julio Francés on the same concert in which his Trio in B Flat Major was premiered, on March 11, 1898 at the Ateneo in Madrid. Both Canto de Amor and Serenata Española were originally included in the suite. It is not surprising that Malats would have wanted to make a more elaborate transcription of the two works rather than a simple arrangement.

Works for Voice and Piano:

We know at Joaquim Malats was a passionate admirer of poetry and stage works and that he worked on a projected opera, Marianela, based on a text of the same name by Benito Pérez Galdós. Ultimately, the project was dropped since Galdós was not able to write the libretto.

There are only three songs for voice and piano Malats which are known at the present time: a Nana (Lullaby) (Source: the manuscript is preserved in the Music Library of the Fundación Juan March, Madrid) dedicated to Rosita Malats, written in the form of a theme and variations—the manuscript is preserved in the Music Library of the Fundación Juan March, Madrid; Tristesse (Sadness) (Source: it is found in the Biblioteca Nacional de Catalunya), dedicated to Eliseo Meifren, with a text by Alfred de Musset, which was published in Malats’ lifetime; and, finally, an arrangement of the well-known Serenata Española (Source: it is found in the Biblioteca del Conservatori Municipal de Música de Barcelona) with a text by José Nieto, also published during the 30s.

We know that Malats composed a collection of songs with texts by Catulle Méndez, María Sourcouf, Henri de Braine and David and Armando Silvestre. However, no publication of these songs is known, nor of the two romances Réveil and En Vous Voyant that were performed by the tenor Ramón Blanchart in 1898 at the Ateneo in Madrid.
