In 1979, I was professor of Analysis and Composition at the Ribera Music School in Barcelona and I actively participated in the Chamber Music Course, run by oboist Phillipe Vallet and flutist Jaume Cortadellas. It was at that time that the Trio for flute, clarinet and the cor anglais came into being, its nature being merely functional due to the educational needs within this discipline.
The work has a distinctly improvised nature, with consecutive themed treatments (1st movement), which turn into canonical episodes and brief fugues. As an example, we can highlight the different spheres which the Cantilena moves through (2nd movement) and the leading role taken by the rhythmic elements and the melodic shifts which take place in Vivo (3rd movement).
The debut of this piece took place in Zeleste, in Platería street in Barcelona during the summer of 1980, and was performed by Jaume Cortadellas on the flute, Phillipe Vallet on the cor anglais and myself on the clarinet.
