My teacher and mentor, Joaquín Zamacois, says in his "Curso de formas musicales" about the Toccata form: "The primitive Toccata consisted of a composition with a natural development, but without fixed rules and procedures...". "... Its classification corresponded much more to the so-called "stile a mente" (improvised style) than to the "stile a penna" (written style) ..." "... Already in its flowering period, in stylistic terms, the Toccata bears great resemblance to the Fantasia. The melodic discourse is frequently interrupted with fast passages, arpeggios, scales, broken chords, etc."
In general terms, my Toccata could be included in the same formal plan described by my teacher. As is usual in this style of writing, the work maintains a definite virtuosic character from beginning to end. The themes are interwoven with filigree scales and arpeggios, which spring from the driving force of the bulerías rhythm.
