There is no instrument that offers so many tone colors and timbres as the piano. Being constructed with a keyboard that activates small hammers which strike the strings and equipped with a sound board that projects the accumulated resonance gives the piano a very specific and unequalled dimension. I conceived this work as several sections linked together which can briefly be described as follows: the first section is an introduction of 24 measures with a dry and expectant quality that seems to speculate on the resonances created by certain harmonics as well as the hand strikes on the strings; in the 20 measure second section these elements are developed with iridescent harmonies; a più mosso begins the third section in measure 45 with a more complex structure and rhythmic elements that become increasingly changeable; this effervescence suddenly comes to a halt in measure 89, and in measure 90 the fourth section begins, leading to a new level of exaltation (in measure 122); the fifth section, Lento, should be seen as an epilogue which is in brutal contrast to the previous exaltation and is filled
with kaleidoscopic sonorities
I wrote Sounds and Harmonics to be premiered in Tokyo on September 3, 2017. It was performed by me and the person to whom the work is dedicated, Natsuki Nishimoto.
