There is a version on demand without divisi of double bass.

This new work for string orchestra was composed in memory of an historic event which took place in Barcelona on August 12, 1714 during the War of Spanish Sucession at Baluart de Santa Clara. This event took place in the Baluart de Santa Clara, in a conflict between the followers of the Bourbons and those of the House of Austria.

I was moved to compose this score as a consequence of reading two books which had a great impact on me: The 11th of September by the historian Santiago Albertí and Victus by Albert Sánchez Piñol.

The history about Baluarte de Santa Clara is truly impressive. I did not know that there had been a squadron of law students under a Captain who was a Law Professor named Marià Bassons.

On August 12, Bassons was violently killed by a weapon explosion which destroyed his head. The grief felt by his young students was transformed into anger and exasperation. They began a very violent attack with bayonettes against the French troops who fled. Not only was this attack an act of heroism but it was one the the most ferocious and bloody battles of the war which however lead to a small victory. On September 1 Barcelona fell which lead to the abolition of Catalan liberties.

My work is titled Santa Clara 1714, The Charge of the Students. It is dramatic music, very expressive, with constant tension and continuous changes of timbre and colour. It begins with a vehement «Introducción» which presents the principal theme which is followed by the first cello playing the theme in the low register leading to a mysterious and expectant section of a certain amplitude. The quiet and trembling atmosphere ends on an estactic D in unison which suddenly begins a kind of game of tensions.

I have attempted to describe my anxieties about this tragic episode especially the emblematic and somewhat curious figure of Professor Bassons and his beloved students. In the final section, the music opens to a more lyric but sad atmosphere. The work concludes with an allusion to the popular Catalan melody El testament d’Amèlia.
