Pastoral d’hivern and Rondeauval are two impressionistic works that are written for flute solo. Just as its title implies, Pastoral (1998) has a bucolic landscape which nevertheless contains certain moments of tension. The composer unifies the song by a five-note motive in stepwise which gives unity.
In Rondeauval (1980) the flute plays over the orchestra playing pizzicato before entering a more contemplative section. This game of contrasts happens three times creating the rondo form from which the title is derived.
