This work was conceived in order to create complicity of atmospheres between two instruments such as the bass and piano which are so far removed from each other and yet at the same time have highly specialized possibilities of sonic fusion. The bass is almost always associated with the orchestra while the piano is eminently a solo instrument.
Here the bass is treated as a highly virtuoso soloist. The piece begins with an atmosphere of expectant calm alternates suddenly with other contrasting atmospheres. This section further alternates with recitatives and cadence-type passages leading to the coda of the first part of the nostalgic and ecstatic Grave nostalgico which has a lyric and restrained character. It is followed attaca by a movement of great energy and strong rhythms. There are vigorous jumps of intervals in the bass which give a climate of strength in "perpetual motion", only interrupted by a brief Lento, just before a fast-paced and wild conclusion. The work is basically atonal and includes special tone colors: harmonics and tremolos in highly contrasting dynamics (for the bass) and strikes and tone clusters on the piano strings.
