This edition is one of the most complete collections of Robert Gerhard’s work for voice and piano. It has been a challenge for researchers and editors to compile, because his work is spread across multiple archives, many of his pieces were never edited, and many that were published present various contractual difficulties. Added to this, the situation of the Gerhard estate and other historical factors have prevented any collection like this from being published in the 45 years after his death.
This collection contains four volumes. This can be considered the “Barcelona” volume of the collection, since nearly all the songs in it were composed there. It is perhaps the most valuable volume in this collection for Spanish musicologists. Among other things, it contains part of the Catorze cançons populars catalanes [Fourteen Catalan folksongs], an internationally renowned masterwork that combines richly sculpted harmonies with refined vocal lines. The present edition is of particular historical interest because it includes the eight previously unpublished numbers from the collection.
