Tres canciones toreras [Three Bullfighting Songs]
This work in an interesting turn toward the most folkloric aspects of Gerhard and specifically flamenco. Without question, it is one of his most risky musical projects in which he again selects popular texts, specifically three incomplete poems in the collection by Tomás Segarra. In addition, the poem Capeador was used at the conclusion of the first scene in the zarzuela La pradera del canal by Agustín Azcona. The manuscript of this work is preserved in the Roberto Gerhard Archive at the Cambridge University Library, Catalogue No. 3.24.
Cante jondo
This work is based on a profound investigation into the basic elements of flamenco, both singing and other musical aspects. However, without attempting to bring to it the same subtletity as did Manuel de Falla in his Siete canciones populares [Seven Popular Songs]. Gerhard presents a more basic type of folklore but also one that is also more profound. This work is directly related to his youthful collaborations in collecting and preserving folklore. The manuscript of this work is preserved in the Roberto Gerhard Archive at the Cambridge University Library, Catalogue No. 3.90.
