Albert Nieto has been for decades an outstanding figure of our music in general and of the piano in particular. Now he also reveals himself to us as an extremely interesting composer.
In his cycle Besos we can listen to a music, let's call it neo-tonal, as we are being catalogued to the current composers who dare to continue using that, for some, antiquated «resource» called tonality. The voice is treated by Nieto as the instrument it is, an eminently melodic instrument, and the piano, as another soloist and not a mere accompanist. Nieto's stature as a pianist is evident in these works where the piano dialogues with the voice and complements its work. In the song «Invierno», he takes advantage of the sound of the piano strings played in pizzicato, glissando and plucked, to create a spectral effect.
The harmonies used by Nieto are in equal parts, in my opinion, rooted in French post-impressionist music, in the Mediterranean character of illustrious Catalan predecessors such as Eduard Toldrà and Xavier Montsalvatge, to mention only two of them, and in echoes of the «nova cançó», that manifestation of pop music that began at the dawn of the 60s of the last century and that enriched our cultural heritage with singer-songwriters of the stature of Serrat, Raimon and Lluís Llach, among others. This cocktail, wisely threaded by Albert Nieto, results in fresh, attractive songs of unquestionable musical value. Welcome to this new facet, Albert.
It is my wish, and that of many artists, that this great musician continues on this new path of creation and offers us many more gems like this one.
