In memory of Frederic Mompou is my first piece for piano four hands, which I composed in the spring of 2002 at the request of the pianist Mac McClure. The work is in the tradition of Mompou's "Songs and Dances".
Throughout his life, Mompou found in the structure of the Song and Dance a way of grouping music, in the image of the "Pavana and Gallarda" of the renaissance. In this format he wrote a total of 15 works, from 1928, when he composed Cançó i Dança nº 1 for piano, until 1972, with Cançó i Dança nº 13 for guitar and Cançó i Dança nº 15 for organ with the title Pastoral. These last two Songs and Dances are exceptions in terms of instrumentation, as the rest of the Songs and Dances were composed for piano, although never for four hands.
Unlike most of Mompou's works in this format, the themes I use in this work are original and attempt to reflect the characters and styles of traditional Catalan music. The Song is a harmonisation of an original melody with an AA' structure: exposition of the harmonised melody and varied repetition of it. The Dance, which begins with a brief transition, suggests a traditional Ball de Bastons, whose quality can be seen in the initial percussive chords that accompany the new folk-like melody. As in some of Mompou's Songs and Dances, the Dance presents a contrasting central subsection, of a restful and almost religious character.
In A la memòria de Frederic Mompou, I tried to reflect essentially the ideal of beauty communicated to me by the works of Frederic Mompou.
