In May 2010 musicologist,  Judith Ortega  defended her doctoral thesis, “ Music in the Royal Court of Carlos III and Carlos IV : the Royal Chapel and Royal Camara”, in which she included an exhaustive investigation concerning the compositional context of the Sonatas a Solo from the Royal Chapel. One year later,in 2011, Judith Ortega and Joseba Berrocal edited a critical edition of the 36 Sonatas a Sola from the Royal Chapel, published by ICCMU in their collection, Música Hispanica, almost two hundred years after their initial entries in the library of the Palace.

Thanks to Ortega and Berrocal,  and the passing subsequent five years, the violist Ashan Pillai  and historical keyboard specialist, Tony Millán bring to light a definitive edition of these works for interpreters; designed for those who play  period and modern instruments. The clear objective is to bring these works into the concert halls and conservatoires.

This revision of the Sonatas was done simultaneously with the recording of all eleven Sonatas by Ashan Pillai and pianist, Juan Carlos Cornelles; a double CD released by the Nîbius label in coproduction with Solé Recordings in 2016. Tony Millán has written a thorough-bass realization for this edition.

The first of this three Sonatas was written in 1778 in C major and is in three movements: «Andante», «Adagio no muy lento» and «Rondo allegretto». The second in D major was written in 1781; also in three movements: «Andantino»; «Adagio» and «Rondo allegretto». His third and final sonata in G major dates to the same year, 1781. It is curiously made up of an «Andante with variations», an «Adagio maestoso» and a «Rondo allegretto».

These sonatas are the most extensive and longest of the Eleven Sonatas. The style is lyrical and designed to stretch the candidate’s technical and musical abilities rather like those works of his coleague, Luigi Boccherini.
