Four songs for mezzo-soprano and piano

They are love songs for the deepest, sincerest and most committed love, but are yet turbulent and demanding. It means, true, complex loves. Four poems by three great Argentinian poets: Jorge Luis Borges, Julio Cortázar, Alfonsina Storni. These poems are so tremendously expressive and musical that when I read them, a whole world of sounds started playing in my head and I found it impossible to resist.

Musically, the melody of the Mezzo aims to highlight the expressivity and depth of the poems, which are generally dramatic, as well as ensuring that the text can be understood. In terms of the piano, it gradually abandons its role as an accompanying instrument, which is often the case in songs, turning also into a protagonist. Treatment always with trend to the virtuosity, sometimes very marked, accentuated, like a soloist. Accompanying times, but above all providing their idea with respect to the text, their feelings, ensuring that between the two (Voice and Piano) has moments of communion, dialogue, but also of confrontation and misunderstanding, such as in the complexity of human relations.

Dolç àngel de la mort (Sweet angel of death) for tenor and piano

It is a group of three pieces that make up a single unit. It is a profound reflection on death, and on that certain schizophrenia that we suffer as people who think about this matter. In the first poem we can observe how the poet puts himself inside an existential, pessimistic man who cannot find any meaning in life. Because of this his suffering, his darkness can only be overcome by losing sight of this reality, of this world. That is to say by dieing.

Instead in the second poem, La mort i el jove (Death and the young man) we find a man who does not see death as a salve for his misery, and who has already asked why there is this final closure. Why has he lived up until now if it is of no purpose at all? Everything I have done so far counts for nothing? These questions denote a will to live, to work out the answers but reality continues to be different from that will.

In the third poem it is no longer man who speaks but Death and he shows us his magnitude. He is like a “Great bird of silence” that flies over the world. The author, speaking through the personification of death, reflects on the fact that the bitterness or happiness that death my give us is not Death’s responsibility, but our own and we cannot be unfair with Death.

I chose these poems because I believe that death is a very important question to consider and the words of Marius Torres can help us to better understand this event.

Vida i somni (Life and dream) for baritone and piano

Is is a work based on the poems of Joan Vinyoli. It is made up of three songs that evoke images and sensations from the three poems: Sovint (Often) reflects on how fleeting life is; In memoriam depicts weeping for the loss of a loved one; and Liebeslied is a love song of a far brighter character.
