I have always been partial to the form of Caprichos, relatively short works which allow for diverse styles of composition. The 24 Caprichos by Paganini represent the higest level of this type of work.

My first Caprichos were written in 1998. Dedicated to my daughter Susanna, who was at that time a developing violinst, they were published as 4 Capricci.

In 2011 my friends Kalina Macuta and Daniel Blanch gave me an unexpected gift—a double CD with many works by the Polish composer Grazyna Bacewicz (1909-1969). Her catalogue of work is very extensive and today we are fortunate to be able to listen to many of her compositions which have been recorded in different countries. Grazyna Bacewicz was also a violinsit and had contact with Karl Flesch.

Hearing this music was a great surprise for me. I had not expected that music by a composer that I was not familiar with would be so closely related to my own sensibilites. Hearing her music for the first time inspired me to write two Caprichos which I have titled Grazyna. They are dedicated to Kalina Macuta. I am feel very close to this composer by our shared perception of music, or perhaps its atmosphere and also by the rhythmic and melodic characteristics of her music as well as its formal structure. The principal inspiration of my two Caprichos were her Capricho No. 1 from 4 Kaprysy and her Sonata for Solo Violin, written in 1958 for the Henry Wieniawski Intenational Competition.

Around the end of 2012 Daniel and Kalina spoke to me about another Polish composer who I knew of as a violinist but not as a composer, Karol Lipinski (1790-1861), who in addition to being a great violinst composed an extensive catalogue of important music.

Lipinski was a friend of Robert Schumann, to whom he dedicated his Carnaval, Op. 9. Lipinski was also a friend of Paganini and performed two concerts together with him in Milan in 1818. However, their friendship was destroyed by their rivalry.

Especially notable are his four concertos for violin and orchestra of which the most well-known is titled Military Concerto. Lipinski also composed polonaises, rondos, fantasies, string quartets and two important sets of works for violin solo—the Impromptus, Op. 34 (Post.) and the three Capricci, Op. 27 composed in 1818.

All of these works are very interesting to me and I did not hesitate for a moment in writing my three caprichos inspired by this music. I hope to establish a kind of dialogue, almost a game, by exchanging their musical formulas with my own. My three caprichos are a compendium of violinstic techniques.
