Throughout my composing career, I have been constantly dedicated to string instruments and I knew that sooner or later the time would come for me to compose a concerto for violin and orchestra. This came in the autumn of 2002 and I finished it in August 2003.

It is a work structured in a similar way to traditional concertos. I owe an important impetus to the memory of the late violinist Ginette Neveu. Her version of the Sibelius concerto has always remained with me. On the other hand, I was also influenced by the words that my violinist friend Emilio Moreno dedicated to me in a letter about my contribution to the strings.

The first movement Moderato-Allegro begins with a contemplative atmosphere in which the main thematic ideas cautiously appear. With an ample development it reaches an orchestral fullness in which these ideas - two rhythmic and two melodic - are reaffirmed. A quiet, mysterious passage recalls the introduction. After fading out, three bars burst in, leading us into the fast part of the movement. Soloist and orchestra establish a dialectical combat of a dramatic nature. The uneasiness disappears until a quiet, insinuating phrase from the clarinet. This is taken up by the soloist, who, by means of an increasingly rapid triplet figuration supported by a crescendo of the orchestra's pedal, leads to the most dramatic moment of the movement. From this comes the soloist's cadenza, which begins with soft double notes. It ends with an ascending progression and the soloist places himself in the high register to call for the orchestra's intervention in a soft, transfigured atmosphere.

Interiorised is the second movement Adagio poco sostenuto e leggero. With two calls from the horns answered by the cellos and double basses, the Adagio begins with a grave character. The solo violin introduces and sings two nostalgic themes. The first in the low register and the second, broader, in the middle register. He begins the Misterioso e leggero, of a soft and delicate character. With the violin singing in treble. The constant figuration of quavers will gradually accelerate the rhythm until the soloist, in the manner of a cadenza, will provoke a dramatic orchestral fullness. Again the Calmo, where the soloist, each time with less and less orchestral clothing, takes a serene farewell.  A double-string ascent by the soloist serves to initiate the Finale-Scherzo. This, in 6/8 rhythm and with a rondo character, transports us into a virtuosic and carefree atmosphere. From the joyful and playful theme presented by the soloist, the main motifs are born, short and concise. An intricate succession of rapid, double-stringed sixths leads to a tense and somewhat combative moment, which, however, is resolved in a diminuendo, which the soloist takes up peacefully with the re-la notes to initiate the cadenza. This culminates in a gentle string of slurred notes to reintroduce the main theme. A moment of melodic suspension serves as a farewell before the brief and jovial final coda.

The work was premiered on 23 September 2005 at the Teatre Monumental in Madrid by the Orquesta Sinfónica de RTVE with Markus Placci as soloist and Uwe Mund as conductor.
