This arrangement of «Intermezzo», from Goyescas, is the fruit of years of experiencing a very unique musical environment at the Academia Marshall in Barcelona, where one could almost breathe Granados’ music —not only in the master classes taught by the great pianist Alicia de Larrocha, but every single day in the work of students from all levels. It must be noted that Granados was a great educator. He composed a great number of pieces especially for his disciples, some of them really rather simple, but still infused with his peculiar musicality.

Immersed in this environment, I took part in the creation of Visions Goyescas, along with my colleagues Akiko Nomoto, David Albanell and Monica Pagès, in 2006. The project was a combination of live performances of the suite Goyescas o los majos enamorados by Granados, and an audiovisual projection, which explained how the musical composition had been inspired by the paintings and prints by Goya, linking the original pieces for piano to the opera adaptation done by Granados himself some years later.

I used to play the first book in the suite, while Akiko Nomoto would play the second. We found it necessary to find a piece to create a bridge interlinking both books, and we thought that an adaptation of «Intermezzo» for piano for four hands could provide the perfect union.

«Intermezzo» does not belong to the suite Goyescas, but it does form part of the opera under the same name, which Granados created using the piano pieces as a starting point. It was originally composed for an orchestra, and it quickly has become one of the most beautiful and famous pieces by Granados, if only by the mystery surrounding its creation: legend has it it was composed by the author in 1916, in the eve of opening night at the Metropolitan Opera House in New York.

Throughout my career, I have included the present arrangement in several recitals. Not only is it a work of genius composition —it is also a very nice piece to play, and it has always been warmly welcomed by the audience. On top of that, it is one more addition to the usual repertory available for piano for four hands. It is my hope that anyone playing it enjoys it just as a much as I do.
