This book is the culmination and methodological complement of "The Language of Harmony". Its sole objective is to point the way to the correct application of the contents explained in it and thereby reach higher levels of knowledge. It is divided into six sections, which correspond to the chapters:
- Introduction
- II The origins / Traditional Harmony
- III Jazz Harmony
- IV Modal Harmony
- V Color Harmony
- VI Extratonal Harmony of "The Language of Harmony"
The second and third sections follow the usual methodology consolidated by tradition. Therefore, the exercises corresponding to Traditional Harmony are mainly based on the performance of choirs and those of Jazz Harmony in the performance and analysis of ciphers. However, the three following sections, especially those of Modal Harmony and Harmony of Color, propose a novel methodology due to the absence of exercise books or similar harmony treaties to date. This has meant a supplementary effort in the realization of this book, since all new methodology involves entering into the unknown and, with it, taking risks. New times and new techniques require new tools and I did not want to avoid using them.
To finalize each of the sections I thought it appropriate to add some exercises, more in line with the composition than with the strict harmonic technique. Its purpose is to bring the student closer to the reality of harmonic use. Generally the harmony exercises are excessively technical and often they move away from the musical creation, which should be their true objective. The exercises proposed here aim to bring the student closer to more stylistic concepts and encourage him to use certain harmonic techniques freely to follow the desired objective.
The book is complemented by a CD that includes the examples mentioned, from the book "The language of harmony". I want the following exercises to be as pleasant as possible. Should be addressed without any hurry and yes with much curiosity, because that is how we enjoy the process, without a doubt the best way to acquire knowledge.
