This work for string orchestra and also quartet or quintet, has two movements: The first one, «Andante», is dedicated to Mozart. It is tender and has a subtle lyricism which is based on a theme from one of Mozart´s Sonatas for violin and piano. A rhythmic figure consisting of a dotted eighth note and a sixteenth note animates the music and provides contrast to the serene melody that opens and closes the movement. The entire movement is broad and quiet.
The second movement, «Scherzo» (Vivace), is an imitation of the famous «Scherzo» (Molto vivace) which follows the «Overture» in A Midsummer Night’s Dream by Mendelssohn. The tempo and time signature are identical (3/8), as well as the rhythmic patterns. Just as in the Mendelssohn’s work, the movement is fast and lively.
