The festivities cycle of Christmas are days of special activity in the field of choral music. Among the projects submitted are the cantatas for Children’s Choir, mixed Choir and Orchestra which are commissioned and performed by the Camerata of Sant Cugat every year. During Christmas 2013 took place the ninth premiere of this cycle with the cantata Com un mirall, a concert that involved the participation of nine choir groups, including Children Choirs. The texts of this new cantata were based on a group of poems by Carles Duarte —appropriate and structured in four parts to capture the vision both cosmic and introspective that the poet has of Christmas—, corresponded in the musical aspect by four parts composed by Manel Gil-Inglada, especially recognized as an author of film soundtracks.

The cantata Com un mirall is therefore the result of the compositional union of these two great artists. The result is a “mirror” of words, images and feelings which move us and take us inside the memories to later find ourselves in the joy of the feast or celebration. It is a poem as cosmic as close, a path of constant interrogation that invites us to understand the profound meaning of this time and proposes a guide to do so: recognize in the verses of the poems the landscape of Christmas, as in a mirror.

The Gil-Inglada’s musical composition is structured in four parts preceded by preludes narrated following the poetic script. It is a magical, concise and brilliant work that thanks to the modern language of the composer and his long experience give as a result a piece of extraordinary dynamism and at the same time a round and classic architecture. In addition to usual training string and wind, percussion and piano, the additional use of various percussion instruments, such as celesta and harp allows the creation of a rich and varied timbrical atmosphere and highlight the moments of mystery, magic and surprise that de cantata contains. We are dealing with an emotional work conceived with great formal solidity.

The Cantata de Nadal Collection

The Cantata de Nadal [Christmas Cantata] Project is based on the premiere of a cantata for children’s choir, mixed choir and chamber orchestra, composed by a contemporary composer based on texts of Catalan poets. This formula, which requires the integration of three different musical formations, brings together three differing values: the musical creativity, the intergenerational participation and the updating and modernization of our Christmas tradition.

In the various previous editions we have been privileged to collaborate with the actresses Carme Sansa, Marta Angelat and Mercè Arànega, who recited texts and poems to highlight the spoken Word combined with music in order to give the cantata a greater theatrical dimension.

For the children’s and youth choirs, the Christmas Cantata provides an opportunity to sing together with a mixed choir and an orchestra a choral symphony composition. This experience gives them an artistic challenge of working with a degree of difficulty and complexity greater than what they are used to, within an intergenerational framework.

We are convinced that the experience of interpreting this work will lead them to enjoy communicating emotions to the audience and at the same time will contribute to improve the quality of their choral family or choral school.
