PRAT, Carles

Igualada (Barcelona) 1985

He began his musical studies aged seven, in the elementary music school in Igualada (Escola Municipal de Música d’Igualada). When he was ten he joined the Escolania de Montserrat, where he studied for four years. In these four years he sang many times as a soloist, accompanied by orchestras such as the Orquestra del Teatre Lliure and the Orquestra Barroca Catalana.

He then continued his musical studies in the Escola Municipal de Música d’Igualada, where he studied middle-grade piano (as his secondary instrument), cello and singing.

At the same time he took composition classes with Concepció Ramió. Even though it is not his main occu- pation, he has won several composition prizes such as: 1st prize in the “Concurs de Composició d’un Toc de l’Àguila” in Valls, with Toc solemne (2006) for “cobla de ministrers”, a group of Catalan folk instruments; 2nd prize in the “III Concurs de Composició per a Música de Cambra de Vic” with 4 paisatges (2005) for clarinet, bassoon and piano; 1st prize in the “I Concurs de Composició per Gralla i Orgue de Vilafranca” with Suite sobre una història d’amor (2008); 3rd prize in the “II Concurs de Composició Vocal Amics del Liceu” with Dolç Àngel de la mort (2007), and honourable mention of the jury in the “III Concurs ce Composició Vocal Amics del Liceu” with Cinc cançons de la lluna al barret (2008). It is also important to mention his work Àngel Perdut (2006), a cantata for orchestra and choir which was interpreted and recorded on behalf of children soldiers. His main dedication, however, is singing. In 2004 he began his advanced degree in music in ESMUC as a tenor with Professor Francesc Garrigosa. He has recently been admitted in a master degree in opera in the Hochschule für Musik Köln, with Professor Josef Protschka.
